Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice is headed back to cinemas in India. PVR INOX has announced that the 2005 film will be re-released across its theatres from July 25, in partnership with United International Pictures (UIP), to mark the film’s 20th anniversary.
The film is based on Jane Austen’s classic 1813 novel of the same name. The story follows the lives of the Bennet sisters as they deal with marriage, family pressure, and society’s expectations.
This 2005 was Joe Wright’s debut as a feature film director. It was produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Paul Webster. The film performed well at the box office, earning over $121 million worldwide on a budget of $28 million. It received strong reviews from critics and also praises for Knightley’s performance.
The film stars Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy. The cast also includes Rosamund Pike as Jane, Jena Malone as Lydia, Carey Mulligan as Kitty, Talulah Riley as Mary, Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennet, and Brenda Blethyn as Mrs. Bennet.
At the 78th Academy Awards, Pride & Prejudice received four nominations, including Best Actress for Knightley. At age 20, she became one of the youngest nominees in that category. Wright also won a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.
According to the official synopsis, the film is “the classic tale of love and misunderstanding” with a modern touch of romance and wit. It follows Elizabeth Bennet’s initial dislike of the proud Mr. Darcy, only for their paths to cross again in ways neither expects.
